There was a sage called Mrikandu. He and his wife propitiated Lord
Shiva through severe penance. Lord Shiva was pleased with them and
blessed them with a boon, saying, "Either you shall have a divine
son who will live only for sixteen years or a bad son who will live
for one hundred years. Choose what you want."
Sage Mrikandu and his wife prayed for the good son, even though
short lived. Shiva blessed them with a good son whom they named
Markandeya. When Markandeya was eight years of age, he knew all the
holy scriptures, and all that is to be known for self realization by
the direct instruction of his sagely father. His parents never
revealed to him that his life was going to come to an end at the age
of sixteen, but they asked him to do the worship of Lord Shiva
regularly.
On the last day of the sixteenth year Yama, the God of death,
appeared to him and threw his noose to the nose of Markandeya, while
he was sitting for the worship of Lord Shiva. His breath was
disturbed as Yama began pulling his soul out of his body. With great
devotion, Markandeya embraced the holy Shivalinga and burst into a
great Mantra known as the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.
A Shivalinga is a powerful meditation and ritual tool. This is an
ancient sacred symbol for the creative and powerful energies of the
divine and is a potent form of Lord Shiva.
Mrityunjaya means Victory over death. Maha means great. Maha
Mrityunjaya Mantra means "the great Mantra of victory over death".
When Markandeya uttered the Mrityunjaya Mantra, Lord Shiva appeared
through the Shivalinga and drove away Yama, the God of death and
blessed Markandeya to become the ever living master of the
Himalayas.
The text of the mantra is as follows:
OM TRAYAMBAKAM YAJAA MAHE SUGANDHIM PUSHTI VARDHANAM URVAARUKA MIVA
BANDHANAN MRITYOR MUKSHEEYA MAMRITAT.
-- I worship the three eyed Lord Shiva, the compassionate One whose
fragrance nourishes all beings. May I cling as closely to Him as the
cucumber clings to the vine, and may He grant me liberation from the
cycle of birth and death.

I had the good fortune of meeting Indi early
this year (2005). The first time we met was actually the
day she performed the cleansing of our house.
The house I refer to is my childhood home, in which I have
lived on and off again over the past 18 years. I no longer
have trouble referring to it as "home", given the immense
difference I believe the cleansing has made.
Though I had never before taken part in a cleansing, I was able to
participate in the ritual with Indi, under her guidance and
instruction of course.
It meant a great deal to me to be a part of the entire
process. Not only was she highly knowledgeable in this art
(or craft), her explanations were easy to understand and her
presence was safe and welcoming.
She wasn't in any rush through the process, but took her
time, focusing on the work at
hand, clearly committed to cleansing the whole environment.
Not only
did she spend a great deal of time and energy on the
cleansing, she was readily available thereafter to check in
on the progress, on various feelings, shifts, changes, or
lack thereof.
She was able to
address any concerns from continuing with distant cleansing.
I believe her presence here, in particular on that day,
cleansing this space, has rid various negative elements that
have until recently clouded not only activities within the
house, but also affected the well-being of
those who lived under its roof.
I have learned a great deal from her in simply knowing her –
her knowledge and commitment extend far beyond cleansing, as
I have witnessed her teaching of Reiki, her explanations of
various Mudras, an I-Ching reading, as well as precise Feng
Shui
recommendations for this same house.
I believe in her as a positive
presence and resource for all those whose lives she has
touched and all those whose lives she will continue to
touch. Keep up the great work!
